Streamlining Digital Asset Workflows at DreamWorks Animation

DreamWorks Animation deals with a vast number of digital files for each CG-animated film. Complex data structures, diverse file types, and dependencies across the development pipeline make it challenging and time-consuming for Technical Directors to make modifications on the fly. DreamWorks asked us to create an innovative design solution for their animation pipeline.

Improving Technical Workflows

The existing asset management system required navigating large, hierarchical structures that could be confusing and time-consuming. As part of a collaborative team, I worked on refining the interface, improving visual clarity, and ensuring that key functions were easier to access and understand.

The team conducted research with Technical Directors, observed their day-to-day processes, and mapped workflows to identify pain points. Insights from these sessions informed design decisions, helping the team streamline navigation, reduce cognitive load, and enhance task efficiency within the system.

Collaborative Design & Visual Consistency

Beyond workflow improvements, the team focused on creating a cohesive design language that could scale across the platform. I contributed by polishing high-fidelity screens, standardizing UI components, and refining iconography and visual hierarchy to support both usability and aesthetic clarity.

The collaborative effort resulted in a more efficient, intuitive, and visually consistent suite of tools for DreamWorks’ asset management system. These improvements helped Technical Directors and studio teams manage digital assets more effectively while providing a foundation for future enhancements.
